What Is A Prosthodontist?

Dr. James Doundoulakis is a trained prosthodontist.  He completed his specialty training at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA in 1985 and his sub-specialty training in maxillofacial prosthetics at Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY in 1986.

Prosthodontics is the only dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association devoted to restoring and replacing teeth.

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Doundoulakis’ biggest role in the treatment of his patients is the beautification of their teeth, better known as “cosmetic dentistry”.

In addition, Prosthodontists are the experts in replacing missing teeth.

The prosthodontist examines and diagnoses disabilities caused by loss of teeth and supporting structures.  This is frequently accomplished with the use of Dental Implants.  In addition, prosthodontists formulate and execute treatment plans for the construction of corrective restorations and prostheses to restore proper function and esthetics of the mouth, face, and jaw.

Prosthodontists are the cosmetic dental “specialists”.

Be careful!!  Many dentists without advanced training or experience call themselves “cosmetic dentists” or “implant dentists”.
If you are seeking an opinion with other dentists .  .  .  . ask them about their experience, credentials, or advanced training prior to initiating treatment!

PROSTHODONTISTS are able to offer their patients a wide range of professional services.  These services include:

Replacement of Missing Teeth
Prosthodontists offer their patients a wide range of options to replace missing teeth depending on each patient’s needs.  Whether a patient is a candidate for complete dentures, a removable partial denture, or a fixed (stationary) bridge, prosthodontists are well educated to provide high-quality care.  Today, we also can offer the-state-of-the-art in tooth replacements – Dental Implants:

Dental implants are an effective; sage and predictable solution to the problems resulting from missing teeth (seem implants options).  Many patients report exciting benefits from dental implants, such as:

  • Replacement teeth that look, feel and function similar to natural teeth
  • Improved taste and appetite
  • Improved cosmetic appearance
  • The ability to chew without pain or gum irritation
  • Improved quality of life

Dental implants are truly a revolution, solving an age-old problem safely and predictably.  Implant dentistry has changed the smiles and lives of millions!  Another very important benefit can be the reduction or elimination of bone atrophy or shrinkage, commonly associated with the loss of teeth.

As a prosthetic specialist, Dr. Doundoulakis has an excellent understanding of dental laboratory procedures, and he works closely with dental technicians to ensure that each custom-made prosthesis is attractive and comfortable for the patient.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Since people are living longer and retaining more of their natural teeth, prosthodontists are playing a key role in helping patients maintain a healthy, attractive appearance.  Prosthodontists are experts in tooth whitening and bonding techniques, color, matching, and the use of porcelain veneers to reshape teeth and enhance their appearance, and the precise fabrication and placement of fixed restorations, such as crowns and bridges.  Dr. Doundoulakis combines the hands of a dentist with the eyes of an artist to create natural-looking restorations that greatly benefit their patients.

Dental Implants and Other Advanced Technologies
Some of the most remarkable advances in dentistry today-such as dental implants are the services that prosthodontists provide.  Dr. Doundoulakis has been instrumental in fostering these advances and they have been on the vanguard of research over the last twenty-five years concerning the effectiveness of dental implants.  As a preferred alternative to conventional tooth-replacement techniques, dental implants offer patients wonderful advantages.  Prosthodontists report that dental implants are rapidly becoming the procedure of choice among patients who are missing all or some of their teeth.

Correction of Oral and Facial Problems
Dr. Doundoulakis’ training includes in-depth study and experience in the relationship of teeth and jaw necessary for a proper bite.  Working with other doctors, prosthodontists provide treatment for patients with birth defects such as cleft palate; conditions such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD); traumatic injuries; and complex restorations for patients who have undergone surgical or radiation treatment for cancer
